Yuanyang rice terraces are without any doubt the most beautiful and spectacular paddy fields around China! Located all around Yuanyang Old Town, those rice fields have been carved on the Mountain by the Hani people for centuries. If it is advised to be in the area from December to May when rice fields are full of water, the weather is changing and it may be foggy all day long in the Mountain. But with luck and patience, you won’t regret the trip here. Yuanyang is also interesting for its intense minorities’ life. You can find a Hani and Yi colorful market each day, based on the Chinese calendar. Hani and Yi minorities still wear their colorful traditional clothes.

Kunming is a city to be shared — its sunshine, blue skies, fragrant flowers, leisure pursuits, relaxed ambience, and business opportunities are there for everyone. The Kunming inhabitants are tolerant and easygoing. They are happy to let outsiders take up the many available local business opportunities. The night market is the liveliest spot in Kunming, and is where the city’s more artistic and eccentric elements gather. China’s most forward looking and avant-garde works of art may be viewed at the Shanghe Guildhall on Houxin Street, and in the converted boiler room which is now the Chuangku Bar — built on the site of a disused factory. In the teahouses and bars around Cuihu Lake may be observed a fusion of tradition and modernity.

The Lijiang old town is famous for its orderly system of waterways and bridges. While the crass name change in 2001 was a sign of the desire for increasing mass tourism a la Lijiang, the town has got nowhere near Lijiang’s crowds, and it’s still possible to experience the area’s Tibetan heritage and see gorgeous countryside in near isolation.
