Across the heart of Daliangshan Mountains: Yi Torch Festival Journey
Daliangshan, ie the “Great Cold Mountains,” is an isolated mountain region, which bypasses the great Yangtze River before going to spread in the great plains of Sichuan, which is almost never proposed in runs of Tour Operators.
The area hosts a large population Yi, formerly known under the generic name of Lolo. The Black Yi, the famous Black Lolo ancient times, shook generations of Chinese until 1956 because they were regularly raiding the lower valleys and plains, where they were prisoners of the Chinese peasants, who were then reduced to slavery. The Yi are over 7 million in Yunnan, Sichuan and Guizhou, divided into over 30 sub-groups to clothing traditions and dialects often quite different. They were the founders in the 8th century, with the ethnic Bai of Dali, the powerful kingdom of Nanzhao.
Although these plateaus and high valleys are inhabited by the Yi ethnic group alone, they are particularly plentiful and there are several different subgroups, with different costumes from one valley to another. Dress only common to all: the Charwa, woolen shawl, thicker or thinner, blue or white. They all use Bimo and Sune, shamans of Yi. For Bimo, whose load is transmitted from father to son by heredity, they are both astrologers but also healers, who read the sacred texts of the Yi.
The Sune have no writing. They chant incantations with a tambourine or a bell, they wave.
