Last memory of traditional textile
Despite their spectacular scenery, large parts of Guizhou are still very poor and are very difficult to reach. This relative isolation has enabled many minority groups in the area to retain their rich cultural heritage and preserve ethnic distinctiveness. In the more remote parts traditional textiles are still very much a part of daily life, in other areas they are used extensively at festival times. The Miao’s elaborate festival costumes are not only their most important possessions, but can be considered the major living visual art form of their culture.

On this trip, you will study embroidery, weaving and dyeing with the Miao and other ethnic groups. Enjoy the wide variety of elaborate costumes - batik, woven, silk, and embroidered jackets; pleated skirts; and hand-worked silver headdresses. At the same time, celebrate festivals, learn the myths, visit the markets, see the museums, and experience the rhythm of local village life
